Off Road Driver Training

The dawn of a new Club year brings important diary dates for the Club Events for 2001. As you know, I am taking charge of the Standard Production Activities.

My intentions for this year are as follows:

EASTER: Saturday April 14th - Farley Quarry 1:3Opm.

Off Road Driver Training, to include the following areas:

1)     Surveying the route on foot before driving.

2)     Driving on soft ground

3)     Climbing and descending steep slopes

4)     Traversing slopes

5)     “V” shaped gullies and crossing ditches

6)     Wading

7,)    Vehicle recovery.

May 6th Sunday start at l0: 3Oam, Meadow Farm Hopton, Derbyshire.

Off Road Driver Training with a NON DAMAGING

NON COMPETITIVE TRIAL, with the possibility of a Green Lane run (numbers depending).

MAY 8th to Sunday 13th, Land Rover World Show, at West Wycombe.

Off road driving all week, free camping and show entry All that is asked is your help to set up the show ~ public off road route and marshalling it at some agreed period during the show weekend (Please ring me on  0961 405454 if you are coming.)

MAY27th, Sunday From 12 noon CLUB CONCOURSE.

Vehicles will be judged by club members on site for originality, innovative features, etc. There will be 2 categories, standard production and off roaders. So if you want to show off your vehicle, then this is the time to do it.

JULY 22nd  Sunday, Great Whitley.

Non-damaging  standard production trial. Come and put into practice what you have learnt at the previous training days.

AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY 26th, Sunday start at

11:OOam. Ironbridge.

Off road driver training / tyro trial (minimum age 16)

SEPTEMBER 15/16th Camping Weekend at Clows Top

NR. Bewdley.

Fishing (fly and course) and a Gymkhana on Sunday, start at 11:OOam.

NOVEMBER Saturday 17th at Farley Quarry.

Off road driver training.

I marshaled a group of RTV drivers at the recent Farley Quarry trial, and I was impressed by their determination to complete the sections, but I must say, not by there off road skills. Little time was taken to examine the section on foot and determining the driving line, with the obvious consequences of a roll over and / or uncontrolled descents of steep slopes.

It may not therefore be just the novice off roaders that require instruction.

Hope to see you at these and other Club events during 2001. Happy New Year to you all.

Charles Deverill The White Hat

MOC President.
